Cullompton is a town in Devon, England in the district of Mid Devon, lying on the River Culm and close to the M5 motorway. The town is thought to have been named for Saint Columba. Notable buildings in Cullompton include the fifteenth century parish church and sixteenth century Cullompton Manor House, built as the town grew around the woolen industry. The parish church is St James. Cold Harbour Mill near Cullompton is a working museum, where volunteers show the part played in wool production by each piece of machinery, some of which are over 100 years old. There are two suggested origins for the town’s name; from the Irish St. Columba who preached in the area in 549 or from the Saxon word “Columtune”, Meaning “The town on the Culm”. Cullompton still features an old market place and the open area where the market is held today is called the Bull Ring. Legends of buried treasure and secret passages surround the site. Cullompton offers accommodation ranging from luxury hotels to caravan and camping sites.
