Dawlish is a town on the south coast of Devon, England, 12 miles from the County town of Exeter. During the eighteenth century, it grew from a small fishing port to become a well-known seaside resort. High above the red cliffs of the East Devon coast, lies the resort of Dawlish. The popular resort has many good shops, cafes and restaurants for year-round tourists. In early times the area was known as “Deawisc”, Celtic for “Devil water”, Attributed to the strong waters of Dawlish Water, a rivulet which runs through the town out to sea and occasionally swept away livestock. Growing so fashionable, it was mentioned in the novels of Charles Dickens and Jane Austin. The encroachment of the railway towards the end of the Century brought the working class to Dawlish, forcing the wealthy to abandon their fine villas, many converted to hotels and guest houses. . Out of the town for some peace and quiet and the visitor will find Dawlish Warren, 3 miles of some of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the Devon coast
