Lydford, sometimes spelled Lidford, is a village, once an important town, in the western parliamentary division of Devonshire. Lydford still retains roadways of Hlidan and a Saxon defensive earth-work wall. The castle can be visited any time, but with deep drops and steep stone staircases inside, caution is advised. South of the village centre, a stone bridge fords the Lyd. Beneath this bridge the river drops away sharply to form the Lydford Gorge.
