Gloucestershire Local information |
| |
Gloucestershire is an English county situated at the northern edge of the south west region of the United Kingdom. It covers the largest Areas of wonderful Natural Beauty in the country. The Cotswold's is the most famous area of Gloucestershire, named for the band of limestone hills covering half of the County. The Cotswold's is known and loved for its gentle hillsides, breathtaking gardens, fine houses, historic churches, known as 'wool churches', and charming villages of mellow stone cottages, nestling in the valleys. Its main towns are Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester and Tewkesbury, and these and the wonderful countryside that surrounds them, offer Gloucestershire's visitors a wealth of interesting chronological and cultural sites, outdoor activities for the more active, as well as providing plenty of wonderful country pubs and modern dining venues to keep most appetites satisfied. Gloucestershire's other key towns offer some great historical places to visit. Most noteworthy include the magnificent abbey church of Tewkesbury, which in the church monument competition is only beaten by Westminster Cathedral; the Tudor ruins of Thornbury Castle; Sudeley Castle and the Church of Cirencester. There are also many beautiful manor houses which are open to the public. It also encompasses the busy city of Bristol, which combines its maritime and architectural heritage with excellent tourist attractions, shopping and entertainment, and the World Heritage city of Bath which has some of the finest architectural sites in Europe. |
