Isle of Man Local information |
| |
The Isle of Man is a magnificent place of beauty and history which lies in the Irish Sea between the United Kingdom and Ireland. The Isle of Man has an ancient history and tradition - it is independent of Britain with its own government, currency, stamps and language. The Isle of Man has a miscellaneous landscape with mountains, cliffs, valleys and sandy beaches. There are natural world parks and nature reserves, a enormous range of varying attractions, events and excellent facilities. The intriguing symbols of the 'Three Legs of Man' - or triskelion - which appear on the Island's flag are The Armorial Bearings of the Isle of Man. On a red background the three human legs bowed at the knee, are conjoined at the upper thigh, the legs are toughened and spurred. The symbol appears on the Isle of Man's Sword of State and on Manx banknotes surrounded by the Island's motto, "Quocunque Jeceris Stabit" which means, "Wherever you will throw it, it stands". Today the Isle of Man is best known as the Road Racing Capital of the World, the home of Tourist Trophy motorcycle racing. Ramblers come to hike around the beautiful Isle of Man countryside through glens and mountains. Come for the action or for the peace. There is a wealth of Manx history from the Celtics to the Vikings. Settlements, castles, and crosses mark the Isle of Man's long history. Whatever the interest or age, there is something for everyone on the Isle of Man. |
